    Farmers say no to shifting yard

    Public representatives, farmers and traders have opposed the proposed decision of shifting the market yard to a location away from the Guntur city after the fire accident.

    They attended a public hearing conducted by the High Power Committee constituted by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S.

    Rajasekhar Reddy, to probe the reasons for the fire mishap in the Guntur market yard and gather public opinion on shifting the yard to another location.

    The committee is headed by the market commission- er, Mr A.R. Sukumara. The other members are Ms Aruna Bahuguna, additional director general of fires, Mr Nisar Ahamed, joint director of marketing, Mr B.

    Venakatesam, the district collector and Mr Mahesh Chandra Laddha, superin tendent of police. The com mittee on Tuesday gathered public opinion on shifting the yard at the district col lectorate.

    The Ponnur MLA and TD leader, Mr Dhulipalla Narendra, raised objection to the proposal to shift the market yard to another location. He said that the present market yard is accessible to farmers and it should be rebuilt immediately for trading.

    He demanded immediate payment of compensation to farmers and traders whose chilli stocks were destroyed. Mr Muppalla Nageswara Rao, the CPI district secretary also demanded immediate payment of compensation to farmers and traders and raised objections to the construction of a new market in some other place.
